Orthopedic Issues During Pregnancy

Orthopedic issues in pregnancy can be divided into two broad categories: those that occur as a result of the added weight and strain of pregnancy, and those that are specific to pregnancy itself. Low back pain and carpal tunnel syndrome fall into the first category – they are common problems that often improve after the baby is born. In some cases, though, surgery may be required.

Conditions specific to pregnancy include symphysis pubis dysfunction (SPD) and round ligament pain. SPD is a condition in which the joints of the pelvis become unstable, causing pain in the lower back, hips, and thighs. Round ligament pain is a sharp, cramping pain that occurs when the ligaments that support the uterus stretch.

In most cases, orthopedic issues in pregnancy can be managed conservatively with rest, ice, and pain medication. However, if the pain is severe or does not improve with conservative treatment, surgery may be necessary. If you are experiencing orthopedic issues during pregnancy, talk to your doctor about the best treatment options for you and a specialist if issues continue, you may need surgery.

Here are things you can do to prevent orthopedic issues during pregnancy:

  • Wear comfortable, low-heeled shoes

  • Avoid high heels and standing for long periods of time

  • Sit down when you can

  • Sleep on your side with a pillow between your legs

  • Use a pregnancy support belt

  • Exercise regularly

If you are experiencing pain, talk to your doctor about the best way to treat it.
